WPATH Letters
WPATH, or the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, sets the standards of care for transgender individuals. Many insurance companies and medical providers required letters from mental health professionals that meet WPATH standards in order for trans and gender-expansive individuals to access necessary medical care. While at Unbound we believe everyone should have the autonomy to make decisions about their bodies and work to educate and advocate on this truth, we also understand the current barriers that exist. For this reason, we offer to write WPATH letters for individuals who need them to access necessary care.
WPATH Letter Process
1 / Schedule an Initial Appointment
Schedule yourself for a WPATH Letter Appointment on our client portal
2 / Fill Out Intake Paperwork
Just like at a doctor’s office, there are consent forms that you will be asked to review and sign. Additionally there will be an intake where you will share as much (or as little) about your experiences as a trans or gender-expansive individuals and why you are seeking gender affirming medical care.
3 / Attend a Clinical Interview
During your first session, a clinician will review information from your intake paperwork and collaborate with you to fill in any gaps of information necessary to complete your WPATH letter. Depending on the complexity of your case, your clinician may request a 2nd session to complete the interview.
4 / Your Clinician Writes Your Letter
Between the interview session(s) and a final review session, your clinician will write you letter. They will do research to make sure it fits the requirements of your providers.
5 / Review Your Letter
In a final session, you will get a chance to review your letter with a clinician and make any necessary adjustments before you or your clinician (up to you) sends it off to your providers. We do this final session to make sure that we are not sharing anything you do not feel comfortable with your medical provider knowing, and to allow you to see the language that your medical provider and insurance company asks us to use to justify care you shouldn’t have to justify.

If down the line you need a letter updated, that can be done at the discretion of your therapist.
